Musings of a "military coward"

E-mail Print PDF

I posted a photo of the “Marlboro Marine” as my Twitter avatar last week.  The photo is of James Blake Miller, taken taken by Luis Sinco, of the Los Angeles Times, during the Siege of Fallujah.  In the photo, Miller’s  face is covered with filth and fatigue, with a thousand mile stare only hinting of the horrors he has just witnessed.

I make no secret of my Army service on my Twitter account, but neither do I advertise it in my profile.  I rotate my avatar to suit my mood, and usually I simply post a picture of my ugly face.

I chose the Avatar, not as a bragadocious attempt of self aggrandizement of my own Army service.  In fact, while I have technically served in a war zone, the amount of actual war action I’ve seen is rather pathetically sparse, and too embarrassingly minimal to mention.  I chose the avatar to honor the soldiers who serve on the front lines of the CENTCOM war theater.

The unintended consequence of displaying this avatar was that many among my Twitter audience chose to identify me as a self-congratulatory war-veteran tough guy.  So in order to more precisely illustrate my point of honoring our soldiers, I then switched my avatar to a photo of a different soldier, whom the camera caught as he was obviously grieving the emotional loss of war.  Incidentally, he was a black soldier, and then when the Tweet topic switched to the subject of race relations in America, I was accused of intentionally masquerading my white race to that of a black man.  You can’t win trying to please everyone.

Demand Transparency on Health Care vote

E-mail Print PDF

Nancy Pelosi insisted that her congress would be the most ethical and the most transparent of any congress in our nation's history.  We don't need to list all the transgressions, scandals and Pelosi's passes here, for with all the back room deals on health care reform we hear about it would take up too much space.  But we should demand that our representatives in the House live up to Pelosi's standards.  Let's force transparency upon them.

It's no longer enough to call, phone, or fax our opinions to our representatives and demand they vote against Obama's health care reform bill or we will vote them out of office.  They already know their vote for ObamaCare will cost them their seat.  So when we call the congressional offices in Washington, we are asking the wrong questions.  "Will you vote with the people on this one?"  That's totally wrong.

The correct question to ask is: "What deal did Obama offer you?"  What is so valuable that you gave up your precious congressional seat for?  A position in the Obama Administration?  Did he promise you the ambassadorship of Portugal?  A multimillion dollar post at a top lobbying firm?  Obama appoint your brother to a judgeship on the Tenth Circuit Court?  How did they pay you off?  What did they promise you?  At what price did you sell our voice out?  If you're still holding out, then what are they offering you?  What carrot are they dangling in front of your face?

Rhodes News is going to start documenting the deals and the payoffs, the deals, the corruption, and the Chicago-style threats that Obama and Rahm Emanuel place on our representatives.  So you may refer back here and challenge the staff members when you speak to them over the phone.

What Republicans are missing in their Health Care Reform proposals, Part 2

E-mail Print PDF

Ever notice how many foreign physicians we have in the United States?  Ever wonder why you spend less and less time with your doctor and more time with nurses, physician's assistants, and nurse practitioners? Ever wonder why we don't have more American citizens who are qualified to serve, and to earn high wages as our nation's physicians?  That's because there is an agency called the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) which serves as the accrediting agency under the U.S. Department of Education.  FULL STORY

The big drama inside the Beltway this week is the big bipartisan meeting Republicans will have with President Obama. Anyone who keeps their ear to the ground on Washington politics can already see how it will play out.  Does anyone serious believe either side will be listening to the other?
